Service

I take an identity-centered approach to develop reciprocal learning partnerships so students can gain confidence, integrate learning, and make mistakes with a trusted and inclusive resource.

Advising

I take the role of academic and research advisor very seriously. As a first-generation student, I was fortunate to have numerous mentors and advisors that guided me through academic, professional, and personal challenges and triumphs. With advisees, I take an identity-centered approach to develop reciprocal learning partnerships so students can gain confidence, integrate learning, and make mistakes with a trusted and inclusive resource.

For masters students, I use my prior professional experience to assist students in discerning which functional areas and institutional types would make sense for their continued career. For doctoral students, I use my own challenges and successes as an emerging scholar to help socialize students into the academy, while providing scholarly and practical guidance on the research process. And for students who want research experience and are willing to be curious and work hard, I collaborate with them as research partner. For example, Dan Hartlep (former masters student at Eastern Michigan University) and I co-authored a chapter in a student affairs case study book and Jazmine Mercado (former undergraduate research assistant) won a ribbon for her research poster.

Volunteer Experience

In each city I have lived in, I have tried to volunteer with organizations that provide college access and success to underserved students. I hope to continue volunteering personally along with building reciprocal collaborations with nonprofit organizations as a pedagogical tool. I have volunteered at the following organizations:
